Its the3rd year Tawi-Tawi celebrated Global Handwashing Day (GHD) since its implementation of Essential Health Care Program (EHCP) in the province on August 29, 2012.

This year's celebration was made possible through a partnership of the provincial Government of Tawi-Tawi, Health and Nutrition Section (HNS) and the Office of the Honorable Congresswoman Ruby M. Sahali under her advocacy project R.U.B.Y Gives Back with a slogan " dain kaniyu, para kaniyu" ( "from you, back to you"). The GHD activities, aside from the handwashing drill and demonstrations in Batu-Batu Central School, Magsaggaw Elementary School and Datu Halun Laboratory School on October 14 and 15, there was also distribution of hygiene kits for the school children, trivia questions for students and teachers/nurses with souvenir items and cash prizes given courtesy of Provincial Treasurer Patricia Mar. Along with the GHD event was the launching of the week- long celebration for Children's Month.

The GHD celebration was participated by officials and men and women of the Congressional District Office, from the Provincial Government Unit, Municipal LGU of Panglima Sugala, TaskForce 62, Philippine Marines, WWF, DepEd Nurses of Bongao, Red Cross, civic organization The Alert Network, Bongao School Districts, teachers, parents and pupils.

Other relevant activities that are to unfold include: forum on Health and Environment, Children's Rights, and Anti- bullying; on the spot song and essay writing contest and poster making which are set starting October 17 onwards.

Tawi-Tawi‘s GHD celebration was indeed another success to count on making people especially school children become more aware of the importance of handwashing in particular and EHCP in general. (tinsangkula/depedtawitawi)
