Tawi-Tawi schools included in the RITM's STH National Prevalence Survey

The Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM) conducted a National Survey on the prevalence of Soil-Transmitted Helminthes, Schistosomiasis and other intestinal Parasitic Infection among public school children nationwide. 

For ARMM the survey went through with school health personnel in the forefront of conducting the PTA meetings/orientations and actual collections which were done on a school-to-school basis among selected public Elementary and National High Schools on September 1-5 and September 8-11, 2014 respectively. Prior to this the concerned health personnel were given orientation on May 19-20, 2014 in Zamboanga City.

The conduct of survey was simultaneously done in all provinces of ARMM that targeted five (5) schools per division which were randomly selected by the RITM that covered one (1) pre-school, three (3) Grade 3 and one (1) Grade 10 (4th Year High School) with at least 60-70 samples in each grade level. 

In Tawi-Tawi, all students who will be positive for parasitic infection will be given proper medication after results have been released by the RITM. For Tawi-Tawi Division schools were: Hji. Yunos ES, Batu-Batu Central School, Hji Akbar Ulama Memorial ES, Pagasinan ES and Sanga-Sanga National High School. RITM and Regional DOH staff came to Tawi-Tawi to personally monitor the conduct of the said activity and received the samples. Datu Halun Sakilan Memorial Hospital Laboratory Department did the microscopic examination of the samples collected. (tinsangkula/DepEd Tawi-Tawi).
