Additional 11,000+ ARMM children finally have access to free education

BRAC Philippines and the Department of Education (DepEd) have established 410 BRAC learning centers in three provinces in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) for present school year 2012-2013.

BRAC implements a different approach to learning, aside from waiving usual school fees and giving out free books and school supplies to promote high quality education.

According to Jamar Kulayan, DepEd-ARMM secretary, they hope the BRAC education model will help improve the literacy and competence of children in ARMM as it transforms the way education service is managed in the region.

Presently, a total number of 11,868 children from the provinces of Maguindanao, Lanao and Tawi-Tawi, are enjoying the free education.

In most developing countries, public school is not free thus the Alternative Delivery Model (ADM) Project which is being implemented by BRAC Philippines makes way for the students to learn through learning center.

As ADM Project-BRAC Philippines celebrates 1st year anniversary, a site visit was conducted in Barangay Samberen, Municipality of Parang with the BRAC founder and chairperson Sir Fazle Hassan Abed along with Dr. Ibrahim Ibay, Mayor of the Municipality of Parang.

Students of the learning center welcomed Sir Abed, with bright smiles.

With the help of the ADM Project-BRAC Philippines, education in the municipality of Parang grown.

Students from different pro-vinces of ARMM now can go to school safe and with high quality education.

Children are learning well, education is developed at it’s best because of the assistance not only of the government but also of the local authorities.

According to Nazrul Islam, BRAC Philippines Country Representative, BRAC Philippines/ADM Project will establish another 120 learning centers in Basilan and Sulu in the next school year.
