Feature: Teaching is a mission

By Waisah Arsad, Lanao Sur II Division

The result of the NAT analysis done by the regional team was alarming. As Mr ACe Iya had posted week ago, only three schools in the entire region has reached mastery level. The post is alarming to everybody whose passion and dreams goes for quality advancement of our children.

The post becomes a calling. If we want to see our people living a quality life, then we must plant the seed of tomorrow's good luck and nurture that seed so that we can harvest it for the days to come. We must prepare our tomorrow by engaging ourselves in today's success.

As an answer to that call we must embrace our teachers and empower them by making them see and realize the importance and the beauty of being a teacher. Teachers are advocates and can be likened to the work of Tableegh (Missionary work). Teachers must take pride in who they are because we build a society of peace, harmony and prosperity.

As I have been saying, for me teaching is not only a profession, but it is a mission I must complete. A mission to touch the lives of our students and of my co-educators. And I can only say that my mission is complete if I have influenced others to respond to that call.

For some, they became teachers because they just want to be a teacher. For me, I choose to be a teacher because of this mission. If we choose to have a good life, then children inside the four corners of the classrooms should evolve as the change we seek in this world and for the future.

BEE and BSE review and plan for next school year

For the first time in DepEd-ARMM, the Bureau of Elementary Education (BEE) and the Bureau of Secondary Education (BSE) have come together to jointly review the current school year (SY 2013-14) and plan for the coming one (2014-15). The Program Implementation Review (PIR) and Planning Workshop (PW) started early this week (January 27, 2014) and will run up to February 2, 2014, in Davao City.

According to Regional Secretary Atty Jamar Kulayan in a memo to this effect, the PIR and PW aim to level off with national and regional programs and priorities; converge with program partners; review SY 2013-14 program implementation; share good practice and learning curves; provide a platform for BEE-BSE participatory and collaborative planning using the Appreciative Inquiry (AI) model; and reach consensus on SY 2014-15 priorities, nature of implementation and supervision, personnel tasking, reporting and documentation and resourcing.

Education Program Supervisor Saada Tubing, who is serving as the activity coordinator shared, for the past two days now, aside from the formal sessions, the participants were also immersed into best practices overseas, particularly Finland - "arguably having the best educational system in the world!" and Singapore - "leading educational system in Asia!". After video presentations, consistent with the AI model, participants identified the strengths and opportunities provided by these systems.

This activity is also supported by the BEAM-ARMM Program under its Support to Improved Governance of Basic Education.

News: ARMM gov't assures more classrooms by 2016

By John Unson (Philstar.com)

COTABATO CITY – The education department of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao is optimistic it can address the region's problem in the shortage of classrooms before the regional government is replaced with a new Bangsamoro political entity by 2016.

ARMM’s education secretary, Jamar Kulayan, said the department has built 1,110 learning centers in the region, which had 400 communities bereft of school buildings when Gov. Mujiv Hataman first assumed as an appointed regional caretaker in December of 2011.

“Now we’re evaluating the possibility of constructing more school buildings,” Kulayan said.

Kulayan said Hataman's administration is working hard to address the lack of classrooms in Maguindanao and Lanao del Sur, both in mainland Mindanao, and in the island provinces of Basilan, Sulu and Tawi-Tawi.

Hataman, who was elected regional governor of ARMM in May 2013, exercises ministerial control over the region’s health and public works department.

“Hopefully by early 2016, the issue on lack of classrooms is already addressed,” Kulayan said.

Kulayan said that about 700 of the 1,032 classrooms they have targeted to construct in 2012 have already been built as of this month, indicating a 60 percent project accomplishment rate.

Kulayan said a thousand classrooms are still undergoing rehabilitation, aside from the 500 more new classrooms that are being constructed in far-flung areas.

“The ARMM leadership wants these projects done before we turn over to the government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front the regional government as a prelude to its replacement by a new Bangsamoro political entity,” Kulayan pointed out.
