Feature: SHIEK MAKHDUM, my ancestor, my identity! And it’s yours too…

By Ustadz Nafeesur Rahman Suhod, BME Director

Today, I am known to be a Filipino Muslim now legally recognized before nations as a Bangsamoro who inhabited the lands of Mindanao, Sulu and Palawan.

I won't be known as BANGSAMORO had it was not because of the historical MORO STRUGGLE. There would be no decades of Moro struggle had it not because primarily of  MUSLIM identity. There would be no Muslim without possessing ISLAMIC FAITH “الاسلام ولايمان”. And there would be no Islamic faith had it for SHIEKH MAKHDUM, recognized and credited with the introduction of Islam in this part of the world.

Shiekh means "elder", Karim means "noble" and Makhdum means servant. Sheikh Karimul Makhdum also locally known as MBOH ANJAWTAL first introduced Islam in the Philippines in the Island of Simunul in a community call Bohe' Indangan, in the province of Tawi-Tawi. He is credited with building the first masjid or mosque in 1380. Mboh Anjawtal lived with the people, married a native, died and buried was in Tawi-Tawi.

As we observe a month long celebration of the 24th anniversary of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM), as well as highlighting the Islamic New Year or “عام جديد’, we proudly say today, November 07, Kasalamatan (Peace!), Kasambuhan (Progress!) on the 633th anniversary of the coming of Islam to the Philippines.

Happy 633th Shiekh Makhdum Day!
