GMA: Drilon calls for investigation of P1.6B remittance mess

The Senate finance and blue ribbon committees will be investigating the P1.6 billion worth of premiums or contributions of public school teachers allegedly missing in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM).

Sen. Franklin Drilon, chair of the Senate committee on finance, said it was revealed during Monday's budget hearing at the Senate that a total P1.6 billion in premiums could not be located in ARMM.

He said the missing premiums are from the contributions of public school teachers in the region to the GSIS, Pag-IBIG, and PhilHealth from 2001 to 2010.

"That is why upon the suggestion of [ARMM] Gov. Mujiv Hataman the blue ribbon committee and the finance committee will conduct an investigation of where these funds went because right now thousands of teachers sometimes could not avail of the benefits of the GSIS because the premiums were collected per the record but there is no record of remittance," he told reporters after the hearing.

He said five years ago, they even allocated P500 million in the budget to respond to the complaint of ARMM teachers that their premiums were not being remitted.

"We will look into this and we are pleased that under the leadership of Gov. Hataman nawawala na po ‘yung mga multo sa ARMM at unti-unti niya naitutuwid ni Gov. Hataman yung mga katiwalian sa ARMM," Drilon said.

Drilon said that his committee has approved the proposed 2013 ARMM budget amounting to P13.998 billion. "This will indicate the confidence of the committee on the leadership on the ARMM regional government," he said. – Kimberly Jane Tan/KBK, GMA News
